Charter school expands curriculum

EXETER — The Virtual Learning Academy Charter School announces six new courses for middle and high school students. The two middle school courses are U.S. History and Orientation to Art 2-D. The four high school college-prep courses are Digital Arts, Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Introduction to Marketing, and Green Design and Technology.

“The addition of new classes is exciting for the Virtual Learning Academy,” said Steve Kossakoski, chief executive officer of the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School. “As our student enrollments continue to increase, these new courses allow us to meet the growing demand for online learning throughout the state.”

Virtual High, Real Opportunity

Last year, Jennifer Cho took classes in poetics, screenwriting, and AP English. This year, she’s taking electives on the Vietnam War and microbiology, all courses that her local high school doesn’t offer.

Her coursework at Virtual High School will allow her to graduate a year earlier than most of her classmates at John F. Kennedy High School in Fremont, California.

Pivot Online Charter School plans an information session

Pivot Online Charter School, a free online public school, will conduct an information session this week for prospective students.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, in the school’s local office, 2550 Lakewest Drive, Suite 30, in Chico.

Pivot, which is chartered under the Golden Feather Union Elementary School District in Concow, serves students in grades 6-12.

Alton said student support services acts as a “hub” for parents and students to get back on track.

“We hook them up with the right resources,” she said. “Some kids have no shoes and can’t go to school without shoes. We have a closet here where I keep extra pairs of shoes.”

Often, the team is able to help families with referrals to community health and social service providers, such as the district’s own health center, at low or no cost to district parents. They also offer credit recovery programs, a home-based online virtual school, free or low-cost tutoring as well as school supplies.

Online School hosts community open house event in Long Beach
