Group wants local charter school shuttered

The California Charter Schools Association, a professional group serving nearly 1,000 California charter public schools, called Thursday for the closure of 10 charter schools not meeting its standards, including California Virtual Academy at Kern.

To meet the association criteria for charter renewal, schools must have operated for at least four years and achieved at least one of the following: an academic performance index score of at least 700, three-year index API growth of at least 50 points, or exceed performance compared to similar schools statewide.

The 10 charter schools do not meet the criteria, according to the association. California Virtual Academy at Kern, a 300-student online school chartered through the Maricopa Unified School District, has an index score of 679, which is a decrease from years past, and ranks among the bottom tier compared to similar schools, according to state data.

Press Release: PresenceLearning Gains Traction with Virtual Schools

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7, 2011 – PresenceLearning (www.presencelearning.com), the leading provider of live online speech therapy services to K-12 students, provides services to more than 20 online schools across the U.S. for their special education students.

Virtual schools have found our service very helpful for their highly distributed populations of students requiring speech therapy,” said Clay Whitehead, one of the co-founders of PresenceLearning. “Virtual school organizations have discovered that PresenceLearning enables them to broaden their reach to students with special needs and cost-effectively deliver the speech-language therapy they need to be academically successful.”

Over the past year, PresenceLearning’s online therapy services have been adopted by a growing number of educational organizations, including dozens of traditional school districts, charter school management groups and many virtual academies such as the California Virtual Academy (CAVA), Washington Virtual Academy (WAVA) and Mosaica. PresenceLearning now delivers more than 5,000 speech therapy sessions monthly to students nationwide. In the face of continuing budget pressures and chronic shortages of speech language pathologists in many areas, educational organizations are realizing significant cost savings with PresenceLearning while also seeing better outcomes for their students.

Oak Christian School opens its doors to online world

Moorpark resident Selina Farrell, whose son Joseph recently enrolled in the full-time online program, said her family chose Oaks Christian School because it supports their values and the new program includes personalized college guidance.

“We’re very excited about this opportunity. We’re really looking for a college-oriented education because (Joseph) is serious about getting a degree in computer science and he’s very academic,” said Farrell, a law school teacher at Pepperdine University.

Joseph, who is 15, is homeschooled through California Virtual Academy, a free public school program serving thousands of students. He will enter 10th grade this fall.

“We wanted more support for him in a smaller class environment. Sometimes in public school programs there can be up to 200 kids in one online class session, which makes the teacher inaccessible,” Farrell said.

According to Kenny, the first group tour of the center will take place Wednesday when 50 students from the California Virtual Academy, a home school program, visit the air museum.

“The center will provide hands-on experience, which is a much better educational experience that we now can provide. This space speaks volumes to Gen. Miles’ mission — to preserve education and honor,” Kenny said.

The center, at 745 N. Gene Autry Trail, is open to all children and adults during museum hours.

Homeschooling in the military: What you need to know

Private School Satellite Program: A PSP is a private school that has filed an affidavit. If you enroll in a Private PSP, it acts as an administrative umbrella for your family’s private school. The private PSP files the Private School Affidavit annually and keeps required records on file such as attendance records, health records and an outlined course of study for each student. They may also keep track of cumulative files, grades, transcripts and test results, if any. A small tuition fee will be charged for administrative and paperwork services. When you sign up, you become a teacher in that school. Your name and address do not appear on the affidavit, but the PSP is required to keep a listing of each teacher and his/her qualifications. (Cal. Educ. Code § 48222.)

Correspondence and Virtual Schools: These programs work much like a PSP or an ISP; however, the teacher is online and they keep all the school records. The California Virtual Academy (CAVA) is one of the largest public (tuition-free) virtual schools in California. http://www.k12.com/cava/

Palisades High to Launch Independent-Study Program

Aventa’s pricing varies based on the program and number of students served, Levine said. For example, it would cost $598 for one student to take a full-year course where Aventa provides technology, instruction and curriculum.’

The company also allows schools to purchase a block of 10 credit recovery seats for a 12-month period for a cost of $2,000. The seats are reusable ‘ once a student completes a course, a new student can take that seat, or the original student can take a new course. If a school has two semesters and a summer school, one block of 10 seats can accommodate 30 to 40 students during the year.

Davenport is also exploring the possibility of partnering with California Virtual Academy in Simi Valley or Apex Learning Virtual School in Seattle.
